A New You in 90 Seconds: How Your Attitude and Mindset Can Change Your Life
Your attitude about your season in life will always determine how you handle it.
Welcome to the 79th issue of The Aim and Soar Life, a weekly newsletter about faith, personal growth, and lifestyle that provides actionable, relatable, and biblically rooted content to help you live abundantly and GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
Hello Friend!
We are sliding into our third week of September with the theme All Things New.
September is by far my favorite month (Hint. Hint. It just happens to be my birthday month). I absolutely love the 70ish temperatures and the brilliant colors of the leaves. School starts again and the newness of another year is on the horizon. I relish mornings filled with hot apple cider and donuts as I snuggle with a warm blanket and a good book, periodically gazing out the window at the September leaves blowing in the wind.
That’s the life for me!
But you know what? It’s all perspective. There may be someone else out there dreading September and the change of the leaves because they feel the loss of summer and perhaps the fall holds painful memories for them. Maybe in their minds, they picture fall as a start to a crummy and cold winter and are reminded of the desolation in their lives like financial strain, health problems, and uncertainty.
Attitude and Mindset determine how we view life and our circumstances. Two people can have similar experiences, but one person can view the experience as a barrier, while the other embraces the experience as a challenge to overcome.
What Are You Thinking?
What are your thoughts about your present circumstances in life? Are you struggling through a season of lack or are you bitter about a prayer that hasn’t been answered yet?
Your attitude about your station or season in life will always determine how you handle it. If you adopt a defeatist attitude, then more than likely you will experience anxiety and depression and may even begin to feel hopeless. (I hope you don’t fall into the hopeless category)
But if you look at life through the lens of hope that is founded upon God’s word, you will have peace and will be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You will begin to expect a light at the end of the tunnel. And no, I’m not telling you the outcome will be the outcome you want, but it will be for your good.
I challenge you today if you are struggling with crippling thoughts, self-doubt, or a defeatist attitude that you make today Day One of the new you!
The new you won’t be fazed by the things going on in your life that maybe weren’t a part of your plan. Instead, the new you will embrace God’s prerogative to guide your life as He sees fit—sometimes allowing twists and turns that you are uncomfortable with.
I have a T-shirt that I stole from my son years ago. (Don’t tell him) It reads: This is not the life I ordered. And honey, I’m telling you that it sure isn’t! But you know what? I have come to understand that this is the life God has given me and this is the life I must live. That is a mindset shift.
The Mindset Shift
A mindset shift for Christians is a move away from current negative or dysfunctional thoughts to thoughts that align with God’s word.
The battlefield is in your mind.
Picture your mind as a landscape and your thoughts as soldiers who must defend that land at all costs! Your “thought soldiers” are girded up and ready with their spiritual weapons to slay the enemy’s soldiers when they attempt to trespass on your mind’s landscape with negative, polluting thoughts that are not of God.
You must fight everything that comes up against what God has said—including your voice when it disagrees with God’s word.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not [a]carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
2 Corinthians 10:3-6, NKJV
Depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and bitterness are not characteristics of God.
Yes, we are human. Yes, from time to time we may feel some of these emotions because of our humanity. However, we are not to be stuck on the battlefield in the quicksand of despair.
We’ve got to speak God’s word to ourselves and encourage ourselves when there is no one else around to encourage us. We’ve got to stand on God’s word.
Nourish Your Mind
If your faith is wavering right now, and you are finding it difficult to stand strong, cry out to God for help. Ask a trustworthy person (who won’t share your business) to pray for you and seek Christian counseling or therapy if you need it.
According to a Psychology Today article about the 90-second rule developed by neuroscientist, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, when we are met with external challenges or situations, a chemical reaction happens in our brain for about 90 seconds. If our emotions (anger, frustration, etc.) last beyond that, we are “choosing to stay in that emotional loop”!😳
As a therapist who is also a Christian, I love when science agrees with something God has already told us.😍
God has given us the power to control our thoughts, minds, and will.
We allow things to linger in our minds that shouldn’t be there. This often results in anxiety, depression, and negative attitudes about our circumstances.
I would say in those 90 seconds your brain is going through chemical changes, when you feel yourself succumbing to negative thoughts, self-doubt, and hopelessness, speak God’s word to yourself. Rinse and repeat.
Let His truth be like cool water running over your mind’s battlefield landscape, nourishing it, and sustaining it.
We can be better versions of ourselves by being intentional about obeying God’s word. Taking control of your thoughts by adjusting your attitude and doing a mindset shift can make all the difference.
Renew your mind! Change your life!
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
