Discover the Joy of "Little Things"
We must program ourselves to take advantage of the opportunities God gives us to enjoy the “little things” in life.
Welcome to the 68th post of The Aim and Soar Life, a weekly newsletter about faith, personal growth, and lifestyle that provides actionable, relatable, and biblically rooted content to help you live abundantly and GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
Greetings Friend!
When was the last time you really enjoyed something? Was it a meal? Was it time with friends or was it a quiet moment alone to read a good book or just relax?
Often, we drudge through life on the daily grind of work and family responsibilities.
When did you last pause to enjoy the “little things” in life?
We’ve been talking about embracing joy this month, and I want you to know that with all the negative things that are going on in the world, God still gives us what I call “bubbles” of bliss!
They are not always found in expensive vacations, shopping sprees, or work promotions, but in the small, ordinary, day-to-day moments we often overlook.
We must program ourselves to take advantage of the opportunities God gives us to enjoy the “little things” in life.
In Ecclesiastes 5:18-20, Solomon reminds us to make the most of whatever God has given.
18 This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. 19 Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.20 They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.
Ecclesiastes 5:18-20, NIV
Let’s look at it in the Message Bible
18-20 After looking at the way things are on this earth, here’s what I’ve decided is the best way to live: Take care of yourself, have a good time, and make the most of whatever job you have for as long as God gives you life. And that’s about it. That’s the human lot. Yes, we should make the most of what God gives, both the bounty and the capacity to enjoy it, accepting what’s given and delighting in the work. It’s God’s gift! God deals out joy in the present, the now. It’s useless to brood over how long we might live.
Ecclesiastes 5:18-20, Message Bible
I like how The Message Bible says, “Take care of yourself, have a good time, and make the most of whatever job you have.”
That is some great advice because it means you don’t have to have a lot—you don’t have to be rich!
Enjoy yourself. Live.😍
It’s not predicated on what’s happening in the world. He’s speaking about enjoying what I call bubbles of bliss. These bubbles can be enjoyed in the middle of hard times.
A couple of summers ago, I got together with some of my sorority line sisters. Some of us live in different cities, so it is a pleasure when we all get together to catch up. We sat and talked for hours. I mean hours! 😘No one was on her cell phone unless it was to show photos or a video and then we connected it to the big screen so we all could watch.
We all basked in the glow of the sisterhood we’ve been blessed with for over 30 years. This was in the middle of some of us struggling with health challenges, taking care of elderly parents, children, and navigating hard spaces.
But we enjoyed the little thing of being able to share laughs with one another. And I laughed my head off! I had been going through a particularly painful period, but in those moments with them, I forgot about all the things that had been weighing me down emotionally. I discovered joy in the little things, like laughing with my sisters.
Here are my top 5 little things:
1. Being curled up with a good book
2. Sharing sister time with my closest friends
3. Spending time and sharing a good meal with my mom and dad
4. Listening to the rain
5. Sipping my favorite guilty pleasure (Tim Horton’s French Vanilla Cappuccino)
Notice that none of my little things require a significant amount of cash.
What are your little things? What things bring you joy and make you feel good?
I challenge you to write them down and gift yourself the time to enjoy whatever is on your list. Whatever provisions God has given, whether it be relationships, health, or wealth, discover the joy of the little things He has given you!
Peace and Love
Until Next Time,
GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
