How to Let Go of Letting Go
God has a way of unsticking us. Most times, it comes with emotional, mental, or spiritual pain—growing pains. You shouldn’t shun or bemoan these growing pains. You must learn to surrender.
Welcome to the 29th issue of The Aim and Soar Life, a weekly Christian personal growth and lifestyle newsletter that provides actionable, relatable, biblically rooted content to help you live abundantly and GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
Hey Fam!
I was pondering our theme of the month, New Beginnings, and it made me think about the situations in life that force us to start over—even when we don’t want to.
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received in life came from my godfather. I went to him heartbroken and soured over a relationship that had crashed and burned. I mean I was crushed and depressed. My godfather said to me, “Daughter, when God closes a door, don’t stand there knocking on it, move away from it. As a matter of fact, you should run away from it. Hurry up, get away from it, and don’t go back to it.”
God knows when we need to move on, even when we don’t. When God moves us past whatever situation we’re dealing with, it’s time to Let. It. Go.
But how do we do it? I’m glad you asked!
Don’t Dwell on the Past
Many of us tend to hang on to people, things, and situations that no longer benefit us and are not part of God’s long-term plan for our lives. Maybe you have experienced firsthand what it’s like to lose a job or relationship you weren’t quite ready to leave.
You keep rehashing the situation in your mind. You keep talking about it, trying to figure out the why’s and the hows of it all. You find it difficult to accept that God has said, “No. That’s enough. Close the curtains. Put the closed for business sign up.” You must let go of letting go. Don’t drag out the process by holding on to what was.
I know it hurts, but you must say to yourself, “God said it’s time to move on, so I must be obedient and move on.” Don’t be like Lot’s wife (she died from turning into a pillar of salt). She paid the ultimate price for looking back on the very situation God had moved her from.
Staying where God doesn’t want you to be is sin.
Instead of lamenting over the past, look at the doors God closes in your life as opportunities for you to explore new doors, new adventures, and new ministries. Remember that He has already mapped out your journey; you have to allow Him to lead you. You must willingly and actively follow Him. It won’t always make sense to you and won’t always feel good. But His ways are perfect.
8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9, NIV
Lean Into Growth
God has a way of unsticking us. Most times, it comes with emotional, mental, or spiritual pain—growing pains. You shouldn’t shun or bemoan these growing pains. You must learn to surrender.
Trust me, it’s an ongoing process because it goes against our human nature. We naturally want to do things our way. We want to control the outcome of every situation. You have to train your brain to let go of letting go.
If you think of your life as a basketball court or football field, understand that these areas have boundaries. You have a lot of playing space, but stepping out of bounds will cost you.
God sometimes has to snatch us away from the areas that are out of bounds. We stay too long and dim our witness or veer off the path God has set for us. Because God is loving, He will redirect us. If we are stubborn or hard-headed (I’m raising my hand because I have been both) then God will do whatever is necessary to get our attention and move us in the right direction.
God is growing you; you are learning from your mistakes, and you are learning to hear Him more clearly. You are learning to discern His voice and His will. You are growing.
The Reason for the Journey
God is in the business of molding us to look like Jesus. He’s not trying to break you, but He may be helping you to break a bad habit. He isn’t trying to crush you, but He may be crushing a tendency of yours that’s counterproductive to your walk with Him and your witness for Him. Every door that God closes is part of His divine plan for your life. Don’t be hesitant or afraid to let go.
Affirm His Word
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10, NKJV
Until Next Time,
GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
