How to Trust God with Everything
Why is it so difficult for us to trust God? He certainly is more worthy of our love and trust than any earthly parent. He is infallible and faithful.
Welcome to the 49th post of The Aim and Soar Life, a weekly Christian personal growth and lifestyle newsletter that provides actionable, relatable, and biblically rooted content to help you live abundantly and GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
Greetings!
Continuing with our GOOD LOVE theme for the month, I want to focus on trust.
Trust is the foundation of any healthy and loving relationship. The ability to “free-fall” with someone is rewarding and comforting, knowing that your heart is safe. In a healthy family, it’s the kind of love that infants and toddlers have for their parents; they know that their needs will be met and that they will be protected. If anything causes them to fear, children will quickly run to mommy or daddy to save the day!
So why is it so difficult for us to trust God? He certainly is more worthy of our love and trust than any earthly parent. He is infallible and faithful. And yet, we often have difficulty trusting Him—especially in situations that seem overwhelming to us.
Last week I talked about having “The Martha Syndrome.” But are you familiar with the “Fix-it Syndrome”? I hate to admit that there have been many times in my life when I have rushed in to fix something that was a job for God, only to cause a disaster or make a bad situation worse.
I had to learn to pray first! Not to spring into action like a superhero! I had to learn to rest in God’s power. It is not always easy because our flesh wants to take the lead. We must train our brains to trust God. Here are some practices to help you trust God with everything:
1. Remind Yourself that God is in Control
We can become fretful if we adopt the mindset that life is just happening to us without God’s awareness. Yes, many of us know on a head level that God is in control. But when we receive a bad report from the doctor, or our finances are in shambles, we may lose sight of what we know to be true.
This is where we have to be mature in the faith and remind ourselves that God is in control. Nothing comes into your life without Him allowing it. No, we won’t always understand God’s “whys,” but we can be comforted by the fact that He is aware of what’s happening in our lives. He knows us personally. Nothing has gotten past God. God will use whatever you are dealing with for your good.
Life hurts sometimes, it’s frustrating and disappointing. But our Father loves us and always has our best interests at heart, even when we don’t understand His ways. The song, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” is a sweet reminder that He’s got you too!
The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry,
Psalm 34:15, NIV
2. Stand on God’s Word
When I was a new Christian, I wrote scriptures on index cards and carried them around in my purse so that I could study them throughout the day and commit them to memory. It helped me to focus on God’s word when I was dealing with adversity in my life.
It’s wise to focus on what God says, instead of focusing on your problems. To do otherwise means that you are magnifying your problems over God’s ability to take care of you.
Even Jesus stood on God’s word when Satan came to tempt Him in the wilderness. The most powerful weapon we have in our spiritual repertoires is God’s word! It’s firm footing when we are weary, afraid, or uncertain. Like a fountain that quenches our thirst, we must constantly return to the Word of God as we face life’s trials.
Place scriptures in a place where you can see them every day, a few times a day! Commit them to memory. Speak them when you feel overwhelmed by life, knowing that God’s word is your offense and defense!
Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Ephesians 6:11-16, NIV
3. Rest in God’s Power
No matter what battle you are facing, you are not facing it alone. My late pastor used to say, “Why are you up all night pacing the floor, when you serve a God who neither sleeps nor slumbers?” In other words, God doesn’t need my help to be God. I shouldn’t worry about my problems; I should give them to God and let Him handle them for me.
I’ve had a lot of health challenges over the last few years. What I have learned is that my worrying doesn’t change a thing! It only demonstrates a lack of faith.
God knew what I was going to face before I was born. He is here with me. My faith is not tested when life is full of sunshine and roses. It’s tested in the dark places, in sickness, and in family and financial troubles.
In my holy imagination, I see God smile when we say something like, “Lord, this is what is happening in my life. I’m giving it to You because You are my Father. I thank You for loving me and taking care of my needs.”
When we let go, free-fall, and relax in His power, He renews our strength and gives us peace that surpasses all understanding. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. So, let God handle it.
Remind yourself that He is in control, stand on His word, and rest in His power. Then you will trust Him with everything!
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Corinthians 12:9, NIV
Until Next Time,
