Welcome to the 47th post of The Aim and Soar Life, a weekly Christian personal growth and lifestyle newsletter that provides actionable, relatable, and biblically rooted content to help you live abundantly and GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.

HAPPY SUNDAY!

I pray that you have a GREAT WEEK!😍

I came across an article online a couple of weeks ago that stated 64% of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions within a month.

If this is true, someone reading this might be on the verge of giving up on something as early as this week! February 1st is only three days away!

I hope that someone isn’t you! If it is, I pray this post gives you the boost you need to stick with it, whatever your “it” is!

I don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. Instead, I tend to focus on setting goals for myself that will improve my quality of life and I pray about what God wants me to do in different seasons of my life so that my goals are in alignment with His.

If you made some New Year’s resolutions or goals and you are becoming overwhelmed by them or feel like there is no way you can stick to them, don’t give up! Take some time to do the following:

Thank you for reading The Aim and Soar Life. This post is public so feel free to share it.

1.     Reassess Your Goals

If you really want to stick with your goals, first reassess them. Ask yourself a few questions like, “Why is this goal a priority for me now?” and “How will achieving my goal help me to fulfill my purpose?”

Place the highest priority on the goal(s) that will help you to fulfill God’s plan for your life as He has revealed it to you. This will make it easier for you to stick with your goals because you know your goals are tied to something greater than yourself.

Also, sometimes in our eagerness to make changes or improve our lives, we overburden ourselves with too many goals or make goals that need to be broken down so that they are more manageable.

Reassessing your goals will allow you to home in on a few bite-size goals with laser focus.

This can help you to accomplish your goals without feeling overwhelmed.

Place the highest priority on the goal(s) that will help you to fulfill God’s plan for your life as He has revealed it to you. This will make it easier for you to stick with your goals because you know your goals are tied to something greater than yourself.

2.     Make Your SMART Goals Bite-Size

I’m sure you have heard of SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) goals. Well, even SMART goals don’t know everything! Some goals like losing weight can become frustrating if you insist on making the goal time-bound.

You may set out to lose two pounds a week, but because your body is an intricate workmanship of God, your weight loss may vary from week to week even if you are doing “all the right things.”

What happens when you only lose 0.8 pounds in a week after working out hard and eating right? You may just want to throw out the scale and go get that big sloppy burger and French fries you’ve been craving, since doing the right things didn’t yield the intended results.

Instead, you need to adjust the SMART goal by focusing on just one or two SMART principles at a time, making your goal bite-size. For example, If I aim to learn how to play the piano within a year, and I still sound like crap after a year, I will become frustrated and want to toss the piano and the whole idea of learning how to play. What I can do instead, is just focus on the “measurable” part of the SMART goal. Something like, I will practice playing the piano for one hour each day for six months is a much better goal because it’s bite-size.

I may not be Beethoven by 2024, but I will feel great about sticking with the process of learning.

3.     Get Help!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to have an accountability partner or partners when you are making life changes and trying to stick with your goals. On days when you need that extra motivation, an accountability partner is a precious jewel who can give you the boost you need!

No matter what your “it” is, if you plan to stick with it, tell someone kind and compassionate who will support you on your journey.

I have accountability partners for every area of my life, and they have been a blessing to me!

Check in with your accountability partners at least once per week so that you can share your progress and get feedback. I literally have spiritual accountability partners to help support me as a single woman of God, creative accountability partners who make sure that I am walking in my creative calling, and financial accountability partners who assist me with financial and investment decisions.

Becoming the person God called you to be is a team effort. God didn’t mean for you to do it alone. We have the community of God as a support system to help us walk out our callings. When someone “pours into” you, it allows you to pour into someone else. The beautiful thing about this process is that everyone can get what he or she needs.

Stick with it!
