Hello Fam!
The Bible tells us there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). The Bible also tells us to rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn (Romans 12:15). God is asking us to be a friend to others. There is a certain comfort in having a true friend.
I’ve had the honor of having a bestie since age 11. We are both midlifers now with adult kids and grandkids (my bestie). We’ve experienced our share of storms together and have supported and encouraged one another through the years. We’ve had some awesome times together and we have laughed and cried through breakups and disappointments.
What I love most about my relationship with my bestie is that we can be transparent with one another. In today's social media-driven society, most of what we see is filtered. People snap pictures and videos of themselves looking their best. We see the highlights. The good stuff.
With my best friend, I don’t have to show her only the highlights. I can invite her into the ugly painful parts of my life. I realize I need someone in my life who can truly see me and love me for who I am. Even when I’m not at my best, I will still be accepted. She is a safe place for me.
It is a relief to have a friend who can listen to you without judgment, and lovingly call you out when you are wrong. It is also beautiful when that same friend can love you and encourage you when you don’t have the strength to encourage yourself. Everyone needs a friend or friends like that.
I’ve talked to many men and women who haven’t been blessed to have a 41-year friendship with someone. Even if you don’t have this sort of lasting friendship, know that Jesus is your friend, and He has given you the awesome privilege of being his hands and feet here on earth. He’s expecting you to be a friend to those in need.
Be kind to others. Look for opportunities to bless someone as you go about your week. People are hurting and in need of kind words and deeds—not for the sake of being a “good person” but because God expects us to model His ways.
Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32, NIV
Encourage someone who needs uplifting. Be a listening ear (without repeating or gossiping). Send a Scripture. Pray with someone. If you have the financial means, bless someone who may need it. Most people would be thankful to receive any monetary blessing. Groceries. A tank of gas. A small gesture goes a long way.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing, 1Thessalonians 5:11, NIV
The comfort of friendship can be life-changing for someone. Be a friend. Be kind. Be encouraging. Be the hands and feet of Christ on earth.
