The Source of Self-Love
From God-originated self-love, you can develop self-worth that is not based on the world’s standards or whims, but on the simple fact that you are loved by God and are precious to Him.
Welcome to the 73rd issue of The Aim and Soar Life, a weekly newsletter about faith, personal growth, and lifestyle that provides actionable, relatable, and biblically rooted content to help you live abundantly and GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
Greetings and Happy Sunday!
The theme for August is A Better Love. I will be exploring what real love looks like as it relates to God, ourselves, and others. Hopefully, by month's end, you will have grown in a needed area of your life. I am learning and growing in Christ each week as I write to you!😍
Plagued by Low Self-Esteem
“I’ve always had negative feelings about myself,” one of my female mentees confessed as we discussed the fallout of her recent dating relationship that ended in failure, shame, and regret.
She admitted that she’s had self-esteem issues since she was a child due to being bullied by others about her looks and weight.
As a result, she has never thought of herself as being “good enough.”
It hurt my heart to hear her say this because she is a beautiful, young lady with a great personality. Like all of us, there are areas in her life where she needs to grow, but she is always looking for ways to improve herself and become a better person.
I submitted to her, however, that she sometimes looks in the wrong places for self-improvement and self-worth. As a result, the outcomes have been either useless or damaging.
During our conversation, my “therapy brain” kicked in, and I was tempted to take her on a self-reflection journey.
But something resonated more in my spirit than my training as a therapist. What she needed was to be told how God sees her. She needed to be comforted with His Word and use that as the foundation for her self-reflection.
The Source
If we as Believers know and love God, who is the source of love, why would any of us ever struggle with self-doubt or a lack of self-esteem?
There’s only one reason: We don’t know how valuable we are.
Here’s the deal: God loves us and sees us as valuable, worthy, and priceless! We are precious to Him!
Imagine a mother or father holding their newborn. The sight of that child makes their hearts glad and bubble over with love and affection. That child is so precious to them.
God loves you a gazillion times more than that!
Loved By God
Not only does God love you, but you are also precious to Him.
This truth is the foundation on which we should build our self-love, not secular self-help books or motivational speeches from social media influencers.
Since you were precious in My sight,
You have been honored,
And I have loved you;
Therefore I will give men for you,
And people for your life.Isaiah 43:4, NKJV
Isaiah 43:4 paints a beautiful picture of how God feels about us—His children.
But what if you are unaware of this truth or simply don’t allow yourself to accept this truth due to a personal history of trauma and wrong thinking?
This would make you incapable of loving yourself properly or valuing and honoring yourself the way God desires because you haven’t fully accepted the way He loves you.
Therefore, how you treat yourself, as well as your interactions with others would be based on a lack of love.
Let’s look at it this way: If self-love were a house, the foundation of that home would be the security of God’s love for us. The evidence of this love is the sacrifice of Christ.
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8, NKJV
From God-originated self-love, you can develop self-worth that is not based on the world’s standards or whims, but on the simple fact that you are loved by God and are precious to Him.
I challenge you this week to focus on 3 scriptures about God’s love for you. Meditate on them. Post them where you will see them daily. Write down the ways you would treat something precious to you. Understand that God knows how to treat what’s precious to Him. That’s you!😍
Love yourself from the source—God.❤️
Peace and Love
Until Next Time,
GROW YOU. GOD’S WAY.
