Why You Should Say "Yes" to Life Coaching
Coaching can benefit you by helping you to achieve God's purpose for your life.
Greetings!
Life coaching is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world right now. According to a study by the International Coaching Federation, the estimated global revenue from coaching in 2019 was over $2.8 billion.
From life coaches to financial coaches, social media feeds are often full of coaching advertisements promising to help potential clients set and achieve goals, earn/invest money, change their mindsets, or even become coaches themselves.
It sounds good, but do Christians really need life coaches? I mean, after all, we do have Jesus. So why would anyone need a life coach?
That’s a great question! If you put life coaching, financial coaching, or any other type of coaching in perspective, the answer is: coaching can benefit you by helping you to achieve God’s purpose for your life!
What is a Life Coach?
A life coach can be anyone who knows more about a particular subject matter than you do and who can assist you to meet your goals. For example, a lot of business leaders hire executive coaches to help them improve their management skills and grow their businesses. These coaches are usually successful in business at higher levels and have keen insight into things such as how to scale a business, or how to motivate staff.
Another type of life coach is a financial coach who is skilled at budgeting and finances. This type of coach assists clients with becoming better stewards of their money. I have served as a financial coach to individuals and small groups who requested help to understand the basics of how the stock market works, how to invest in the market, and how to set up LLCs.
This is not the same as a financial advisor who has specific financial training and is licensed to invest your money for you. What I provided is financial literacy and education. I taught what I know.
I’ve also provided coaching to individuals who were interested in writing a novel or non-fiction book. I used my knowledge and skills in book writing and publishing to help them become better writers and to achieve their goals.
Is Life Coaching Biblical?
If you are wondering how life coaching fits in biblically, it’s important to know that a coach doesn’t take the place of you seeking God’s direction for your life.
A coach is someone to provide you with resources and accountability. They are skilled in certain areas, and therefore they can help you to improve in those areas. This could include a stay-at-home mom receiving coaching on organization, meal planning, or how to earn money from home while raising small children.
There is nothing biblically wrong with receiving this type of assistance. In fact, it is prudent and beneficial for you to seek a coach in any area that will help you to fulfill your calling or to become better skilled at a hobby or interest.
There are Christian life coaches who provide specialty coaching, such as financial coaching or business coaching from a Christian worldview.
If you are a Christian, everything you do is for God, whether you work in a ministry or work in the secular industry. It all comes back to God.
If there is someone who can help you to do what God has called you to do, that my friend is a benefit you can’t afford to pass up!
How Much Does Life Coaching Cost?
Some coaches across various niches have low-cost coaching, while others have coaching programs that run into the thousands. Depending on what you need and a coach’s expertise, coaching could be quite expensive.
However, you can always find a coach that fits your budget. One thing you might consider is asking someone to coach you and establish an agreed-upon price.
Important Things to Know About Life Coaching
Life coaching is an unregulated industry, meaning there are no state or federal governing bodies that oversee life coaches. Therefore, anyone can call themselves a life coach and set up a business as a life coach. This could be good or bad. For this reason, you should always be diligent about researching a person before you pay for their services. Find out about their background and qualifications first.
The International Federation of Coaches is one of the oldest training and networking businesses for life coaches. They have their own “certification” programs.
However, there are many skilled coaches who do not belong to the IFC and are very knowledgeable in their areas of expertise.
No one has to pay thousands of dollars to become “certified” by any life coaching program. It is a personal choice because as I stated earlier, life coaching is an unregulated industry. Anyone can develop his or her own successful training program and offer “certification.”
What Life Coaching is Not
A life coach is not a therapist who can help you with past traumas or psychological problems. If you have issues such as substance abuse or severe depression, you need to talk to a licensed therapist or counselor.
